Default figure skates vs hockey skates?

I'm a beginner skater (only spent a few hours on the ice) and was wondering if I could have some advice about buying a pair of skates to use regularly.

As I've only been able to use the hire figure skates I wondered if it would be best to stick with figure skates or if I should get hockey skates as these seem to be much more abundant but this might be because its more fashionable - since there seem to be very few figure skates for men.

Is there any advice that would be suitable for a beginner, such as weight distribution on the ice, difficulty in moving and balance that would be useful when choosing a pair of skates.

Thanks very much for your advice
