8 furlongs are in a mile.
Most british horse racing are run over furlongs.
Sprints are normally 5f to 7f.
Middle distances are normally 1mile to 1m 4 furlongs
Stayers are normally 1m 5f to 2m 4 furlongs

A furlong is an eighth of a mile. There are 8 furlongs in a mile. 2 furlongs is a quarter mile. 4 is a half mile and 8 is a mile.
